Black Women and Interracial Dating | The Chicago Defender
Single women do not want to know why society has forced us into a certain arena for dating. I think it was the title that threw me off.
It was interesting to see what the author had to say about interracial dating and a pretty fast read for me. Gave you pointers of what to do. It was extremely boring and it seem kind of scattered. I didn't find it helpful. It was like he wrote the book just to see who would buy it. One person found this helpful. Thank you so much for having the courage to tell it like it is. This was one of the first book of this kind and it opened the floodgates for me and I have since read Halima Anderson, and many others in the BWE movement and CW black women Deserve Better. I have always dated men of all races including my own and have the weird experience of being married for the past 17 years to a mixed race man who looks white!!
I'm a middle class, middle aged black British conscious feminist intellectual of the bell hooks school of thought and these books were still a major revelation and liberating force. I have lived in my native Britain and the Caribbean where I became much darker and look 10 years younger than I am- so I've seen it all- been too black, for Caribbean colonially brainwashed morons too light a coconut , experienced all different sides of the coin and received the attacks from 3 generations of culturally diverse black and white people-So I speak from a position of ridiculously extensive experience.

I've shared this blessing with all my black and white girlfriends and will continue to do so until I drop dead!! You prayed for a miracle and these beloved sisters have delivered it!!!! This book was informative. Other interracial dating books I've read just give me endless statistics upon statistics.
Matters that I could care less about. I wanted some guidance into foreign territory, and I can honestly say that this book provided that. It talked about approaches, and methods, and differences, and common sense factors that might be overlooked simply because one's concentration is hung up on the overarching race factor. This book helped to me to loosen up, engage and make eye contact. Simple things that made a tremendous difference. I didn't 5 star it because though it was informative I also have to admit that it was not an engaging read.
It felt very impersonal, almost robotic. Other books with less guidance present their findings in such colorful, down to earth language that your grabbed. This book will deter a reader simply for it's lack of "flavor". It read like a college text book.

It follows that they are also the least likely to date outside of their race. But why is this? Not only that, but my only serious relationship has been with a man outside of my race. These relationships were no different than those in my racial category except for one dirty little issue: Most of these relationships did not succeed or fail because of race, but it was disturbing to me that race and the stereotypes attached to them were ever an issue in the first place.
I have continually wondered why my race is so important, but never so much as in past dating experiences. I was raised to appreciate and value diversity in the world around me. My mother always taught me that it was the person who mattered. And her mother told her the same thing.

Our society views the ideal woman in light of gender roles. The ideal woman is feminine — docile, innocent, yet not naive; submissive, yet strong and attractive.
Black women, however, are stereotyped as being loud, aggressive, angry and bitter. If a black woman is angry, it is not assumed that she is just a woman who is experiencing the emotion of anger in the moment. She embodies the trope of an angry black woman. For no other race does this type of term exist. This is portrayed both positively and negatively.
