Since then I have read over titles, and still rank this as the gold standard to compare all other romance books Roberts, Carr, Sparks, Macomber, etc. I hope that this series makes it to the big screen. This story has been done before in many different ways. Here we have a wealthy man Jack who wants to find a woman who doesn't want him for his money. Then we have a struggling single mother Jessie who is a waitress at Denny's and wants a man with money.
Of course, but cute none-the-less. Jack is a likeable down-to-earth guy and Jessie has more walls up than a castle. Their interactions make the book worth reading. The genuine honesty in both characters is sweet. It's a clean love story, albeit unbelievable. I first read the reviews, but then I bought the book anyway because I'd already read 5 in the series by mistake, but oh well and I like Bybee's writing and story and character development.
I read this book and loved it so much, I started at the beginning and read it all over again! With the same feelings I had before. I think I'm in love with Jack!!!
Yeah, he lied to Jessie but he had lots of reasons to. When an author puts together a story, it has to have logic behind the psychology of the characters' makeup. Bybee's characters make perfect sense to me. I read romance for the HEAs, honestly. Life is hard enough because there are very few HEAs in anyone's life, and many times there are none. So I buy romance novels, I attempt writing them I have 2 complete drafts and still working on them, learning from good romance authors still , and I've never had so much fun in my life.
This is my first time at reading the writings of Ms Catherine Bybee. Very well written sweet romance story. I loved the main characters Jessie and Jack.
One minute it had me laughing the next upset even letting a couple of tears roll down my cheeks. Reading about or watching people fall in love has always warmed my heart. For real love is the best feeling of all no matter your age, who, or what you love!! Its the greatest feeling ever!! Great book and wonderful characters. I bought this because I've seen this series dominate the Kindle Top for longer than I can recall and thought I'd see why. Sometimes when I grab from the Top I'm disappointed, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book and if the rest in the series are this good I completely understand the popularity.
The hero is filthy rich and wants a woman to love him for himself. The heroine is a single mother who has been burned before and wants a man who is financially well off, which I didn't like at first because it made her seem incredibly shallow, but further reading reveals she's really not shallow at all.
The hero pretends to work at the hotel his family actually owns and builds a relationship with her, slowly working his way into her and her son's heart while keeping his true identity secret. One person found this helpful. She is still struggling. Jack is a millionaire, pretending to be a normal guy working as a waiter.
Jessie wants the stability of a wealthy man, while Jack wants a woman who is not after his money. I found Jessie to be a little whiny and not relatable, but I did like Jake and the amazing way he connected with Danny. So if you just want some light reading this is a book for you. Awesome telling of the development of a lasting romance. His buddies at the table had known him since high school.
If they ever wanted to stay at the Morrison Hotel and Casino on the Vegas strip for a week or a month or however long, for that matter, Jack would make it happen. They all held executive positions or owned their own businesses, making it nearly impossible for them to get together as it was. The weekend bachelor party would have to do.
Jack had insisted they drive instead of jet over the California desert. Dean was the first of the four of them to get married, making this their last trip together as single men. The last time they could all get pissing drunk and not have to explain themselves to a woman. Deep inside Jack knew this…was ready for it. Think fans of hers will like this story. Jessie struggles between what her heart wants and what she thinks she needs as her friendship with Jack evolves into love.

Lately I've been reading books with so much angst, drama, and emotion in them that it was nice to switch to something a little lighter in tone.
Not Quite Dating is a sugary sweet, easy read that makes you feel good. It's straight romance, and refreshing in it's simplicity. Jack is a billionaire heir to a large hotel empire who is growing weary of gold digging women. Jessie is a single mother working the grave yard shift at a local diner who has a past littered with poor "men" choices. She has a knack for attracting dead beat guys, and she is convinced that she will not make that mistake again.

The premise of this book is quite simple. Jack wants to hide his wealth and find a woman who wants him solely for himself and not his bank account. He decides to keep his real identity a secret and instead pose as a transient temp waiter. Jessie is sick of picking broke and unambitious playboys that leave at the drop of a hat.

The next guy she falls for is going to be successful and have money in the bank. The attraction between Jessie and Jack is immediate, but Jessie refuses to make the same mistake again. After making it clear that she has no intentions of dating Jack, the two decide to become friends. This "friendship" is brimming with sexual tension, and I loved how the author takes the time necessary to make this relationship feel believable.

Danny, Jessie's adorable 5 year old son also plays a large role in this story. There were so many "precious moments" with Danny that I honestly lost count. The relationship that develops between Jack and Danny seemed so real and authentic, that there were times I wanted Jessie to get a clue and acknowledge what was right in front of her face! Not Quite Dating was a strong 4 star read until the secrets and lies dragged on for a bit too long. Other than that one tiny complaint, I absolutely adored this romantic "rags to riches" story.

However, I really liked this book and I was really happy that I got to listen to it while I was at work today. Not Quite Dating was a really cute romance novel. I loved both characters, Jack and Jessie, and I definitely fell in love with lit I had no expectations for this book. I loved both characters, Jack and Jessie, and I definitely fell in love with little Danny. I didn't hate or feel annoyed by any characters - other than the narrator making Jack sound like such a hillbilly. I can't wait to see what will happen in the next book. I also kind of want a love like Jessie and Jack's but without the whole lying thing I'll accept all the loving though.
Feb 09, Scott-robert Shenkman rated it really liked it. The fun is in getting to the ending. And this book is fun. A lot of fun. Jessie and Jack are extremely likeable, cool characters and you have to root for them. Is there lying going on? So no biggie, right? Oh, just read it and figure it out. Plus with all the lying, I'm done. The stars I gave this one are for how much I enjoyed Bybee's writing. It's reminiscent of Laura Florand's and was very enjoyable to read. View all 4 comments. You know that her characters are going to have a good attractions with pits and falls before fully coming into the romance and a brilliant feel good ending.

Money is tight and she often has to juggle her funds to the penny and would love to fall in love and marry a rich man to provide more stability in her sons life. She wants her son to have the best he can. Jack Morrison is on his way back with his buddies from a stag do when they go for a meal at the dinner where Jessie works. He is immediately drawn to the waitress and becomes entranced when she tells him no. A feeling that he has never felt before has him deciding that for the first time he actually wants to chase a woman to see if she would fall for his as him, so he pretends to be a poor waiter.
He is actually the son of a billionaire hotel tycoon and is rich on his own merits. Jessie and Jack provide a brilliant chase where Jack is constantly kept on his toes and Jessie shows her loyalty to her family and her love for her son. It is heart warming to see how Jack instantly connects with Jessie's young son and just seems to slip effortlessly into their lives. Of course both Jessie and Jack hit a few bumps and have a few misunderstandings, which only makes the romance seem more plausible and endearing. I already love this series and can't wait to read the next one!

May 10, Debby "Piene Raven" rated it really liked it Shelves: Well with that being said, I can say this was one story I was totally captivated by the characters and story line. Jessie Mann, a waitress working the graveyard shift has had enough of broke men or men wanting to use her for what little she has…which is practically nothing.
She has enough trouble in her life and dating some guy she thinks is interesting and cute isn't enough.
